How to Install a Stethoscope Diaphragm and Retaining Ring

Featuring our MD One® Stainless Steel Dual Head Stethoscope in S.Swell

To put your MDF® stethoscope diaphragm and retaining ring on the chestpiece, take your diaphragm and retaining ring and insert the edge of the retaining ring onto the edge of the chestpiece. You’ll feel it set in the ridges.

Using your thumb, work the retaining ring around the edge of the stethoscope chestpiece. If the diaphragm lifts up on top, carefully tuck it underneath the retaining ring and back into place.

If your diaphragm and retaining ring are separated, first install the stethoscope diaphragm into the ring. Place the retaining ring with the shorter ridges facing you. The larger ridges will be on the outside of the chestpiece. Hold the MDF® stethoscope diaphragm with the logo facing out and insert the edges of the diaphragm into the short ridges of the ring, facing out. If you are having difficulties getting the stethoscope retaining ring to be flexible enough and it seems too stiff, check out the below method, using warm water to soften the retaining ring. This will make it more pliable and easier to install, but be cautious when using warm water as it has the potential to burn. Your water will not need to be this hot. You may also warm the ring with a blowdryer.

To place the stethoscope diaphragm into the retaining ring, warm up the ring to make it more flexible. You can warm up the retaining ring in a cup of warm water or using a blow dryer. Make sure to completely dry your retaining ring if you are using warm water, before installing the diaphragm.Slide the stethoscope diaphragm into the ring and make sure the diaphragm is secure without any edges peaking out.To install the assembled retaining ring and diaphragm onto the chestpiece, place the lip of the ring under the edge of the chestpiece. Continue to press the ring along the edges of the stethoscope chestpiece, until it snaps into place. You’re all set.
